President Johnson took office after the assassination of Abraham Lincoln on April 15, 1865. He often took carriage rides out into the surrounding countryside to relax with his family after a stressful day of politics at the White House. This ornament features a three dimensional replica of a carriage of the type used by the president. Beautifully crafted, it has a 24-carat gold finish and 8 enameled colors. An 1867 photograph of the south facade of the White House inspired this engraved style illustration. The ornament depicts President Johnson, his children and grandchildren, returning to the White House from an afternoon carriage ride.
