The White House Historical Association’s 1998 Christmas ornament recalls the Democrat Buchanan’s “republican court.” Its design borrows from the romantic garlands and wreaths with which Harriet Lane decorated the house. Here she has incorporated camellias with blossoms from Andrew Jackson’s magnolia tree that grows on the White House south lawn. The American eagle flies on the Union shield, insignia from Andrew Jackson’s dinner service, which Buchanan must have remembered from long before, and which he himself used in the White House.
